Academics
Dedicated to integrity, civic engagement, and social justice, Bennett College, an all-female college, specializes in engaging and transforming its scholars into leaders of service in an evolving society. These Bennett Belles enjoy highly individualized academic and preprofessional services, developing a sisterhood on campus that results in a lifetime network of peer and mentor support. In alignment with Bennett’s mission of affecting international change, students from all fields of study are encouraged to explore a minor or a certificate in global studies, a pursuit that encourages studying abroad and doing original student research. Bennett’s 24 majors are split between two groups. The Division of Arts and Sciences houses STEM, humanities, as well as social and behavioral sciences. Dedicated to truth, spirituality, and social justice, Arts and Sciences students pride themselves in scholarship dedicated to inquiry and transformative civic engagement. Meanwhile, the Division of Professional Studies prioritizes internships, field practice, and service opportunities to ensure that graduates are ready to enter careers in business, education, journalism, and social work. The Center for Entrepreneurial Studies guides business students through all stages of developing enterprise, whether they’re interested in high-tech startups or nonprofit endeavors addressing society’s persistent and urgent needs.
Career
The campus culture at Bennett College is committed to supporting each student’s academic goals and nurturing a lifelong sisterhood among Belles. Academic supports such as tutoring, scholarships, and grants for study abroad are available to all students. Bennett offers robust counseling services wherein students can access everything from mental health care to career placement support. First- and secondyear students are guaranteed on-campus housing, and the Bennett Parents Association empowers families to support their students’ scholastic endeavors. Bennett Belles shine within a thriving sorority scene, and the royal court ensures that everything from food drives to the annual soul music festival is a success.In addition to generating a love of lifelong learning, service and community enrichment are enduring themes throughout Bennett’s cocurricular and extracurricular programs. The Wonder Girls program brings Belles into local elementary schools to mentor female students, and an affiliation with the police department empowers Bennett students to act as law enforcement ambassadors on campus. The Steel Hall Gallery finds innovative ways to exhibit Bennett’s collection of historical artifacts while also showcasing contemporary artists. The newly renovated Little Theatre welcomes outside theater groups and hosts the new annual Black Lives Matter Theater Festival held in the spring.
Culture
The Career Services Office helps students explore majors and careers, find internships, and develop job search skills. The Office is not only available to assist students with their post-graduation job search but will also help students looking to apply for an advanced degree. Graduates of Bennett College go on to enjoy careers in education, social work, civics, communication, and global leadership. Celebrated alumnae include Dorothy L. Brown, the first Black woman fellow of the American College of Surgeons; Carolyn Robertson Payton, the first woman and the first African American to direct the Peace Corps; and Yvonne Johnson, the first Black mayor of Greensboro, North Carolina.
