The Princeton Review Has Released Third Edition of “College Admission 101: Expert Advice for the New Challenges in Admissions, Testing, Financial Aid, and More”

NEW YORK, May 17, 2022 / — The Princeton Review ® — known for its many education services and products that help students research, apply to, and gain admission to colleges — today released an updated third edition of its book, College Admission 101: Expert Advice for the New Challenges in Admissions, Testing, Financial Aid, and More (Penguin Random House, May 17, 2022, $12.99).

Authored by Robert Franek, The Princeton Review's Editor-in-Chief, College Admission 101 is a collection of his straightforward and helpful answers to the 60+ FAQs he has heard from college-bound students and their parents in his many presentations to them across the country.

As one of the nation’s leading college experts, Rob is highly knowledgeable about colleges and their distinctive offerings: he visits more than 50 colleges a year. He is also keenly attuned to the perspectives of college applicants and their parents: he gives more than 100 talks a year to high school students, their parents, and their counselor/advisors on college admission. In his introduction to College Admission 101, he notes, “This book presents the clearest answers I can provide to the most frequent, savvy, and urgent questions that I’ve been getting.”

Among the 60+ questions Rob answers over the book’s eight chapters:

  • What do college admission officers look for?
  • What’s more important: GPA or test scores?
  • What does it mean when a college is "test optional"?
  • What changes are coming to the PSAT® and SAT®?
  • Should I take the ACT®, SAT, or both?
  • How do I determine the best college for me?
  • What extracurricular activities do colleges want to see?
  • How does the financial aid process work?
  • Will I be penalized if I apply for financial aid?
  • How can a parent participate most effectively in their child’s college application process?

Originally published in May 2018, and updated in October 2020, this edition of the book has timely information for students graduating from high school within the next three years. It discusses how college admission has changed since 2020, as well as upcoming standardized testing updates when the College Board debuts the new Digital SAT® internationally in 2023 and within the U.S. in 2024.

College Admission 101 also includes a college-admission checklist, a high school testing timeline, and a list of 26 tips for getting financial aid, scholarships, and grants from Kal Chany, author of The Princeton Review’s annually updated financial aid guide, Paying for College

An appendix presents gems of advice from some of the more than 14,000 college applicants and parents who have participated in The Princeton Review's annual College Hopes & Worries Survey. The advice most proffered by students and parents alike in response to the question, “What would you tell next year’s applicants?” was "Start early!"

College Admission 101 is part of a line of more than 150 books developed by The Princeton Review and published by Penguin Random House. Others in the line on college-related topics include annually-updated guides to the SAT, ACT, and AP® exams; The Best Colleges (2023 edition forthcoming August 2022); Paying for College (2023 edition forthcoming September 2022); The Ultimate Guide to HBCUs (forthcoming July 2022); and The College Wellness Guide (2021).
