At Voorhees College, the motto “Begin, Believe, Become” springs to life. Students begin with an intensive general learning experience that is focused on helping them to thrive in a diverse global society. Along the way, the college offers experiential programs that reinforce their personal success. For example, those getting an education in cybersecurity may partake in internships with the National Nuclear Security Administration. Ultimately, this career-oriented liberal arts college helps students achieve their goals, with degrees ranging from biological sciences to business administration, with specializations in criminal justice and sports management, as well as pre-professional programs for medicine and nursing. VC is specifically seeking students with an interest in pursuing lifelong learning, healthy living, and an abiding faith in God. The end goal is to help students go forth to improve communities, societies, and themselves.
Career
While a solid liberal education is VC’s #1 priority, being a well-rounded student also includes engaging in school activities, developing extracurricular skills, and enjoying a social life. For a small college, the student life offerings are remarkably robust. The campus has six residence halls to choose from, and each hall is designed as a small community, with 40 students per floor. Each hall has its own slate of cultural, educational, and social programs for residents to enjoy. The campus features a variety of organizations, from performance clubs like concert choir, theater, and VC Poetic to academic clubs such as Math and Computer Science Club (MACS) and leadership clubs like the Student Government Association and Residence Councils. VC also has honors societies, Greek organizations, and extensive athletic programs. The Voorhees College NAIA athletic teams, known as the Tigers, compete in ten different competitive sports and the basketball team, in particular, has many devoted fans. VC also has a co-ed cheerleading squad as well as fun intramural sports offerings ranging from flag football and volleyball to tennis, soccer, basketball, and aquatics.
Culture
A Voorhees education balances a well-rounded liberal arts education with practical career training. This reflects both the philosophy of Dr. Booker T. Washington, who advocated teaching jobs skills, and Dr. W.E.B. Dubois, who believed a liberal education alone would prepare students to become leaders. The curriculum is regularly reviewed to streamline course offerings and to reflect 21st century needs. Through its own Career Services, and as a member of The Carolina Cluster Career Pathways Program, VC supports every stage of the career process, from helping students choose goal-oriented schedules to assistance with career planning, résumé writing, interviewing skills, and more. Internships and hands-on experience are emphasized, as are creating cocurricular opportunities across multiple disciplines and majors. Notable alumni include politician Jeanette McBride, South Carolina state senator Ronnie Sabb, and architect L.O. Bankhead.
